While many Americans are understandably still adjusting to their new work routines and home office setups, CoLab's members have been thriving as artists, entrepreneurs, and remote workers for years. We recently surveyed them to try to gain, and pass along, some insight to help others be more productive while working remotely. We compiled their responses into the following suggestions that can help anyone make the most of their time working from home.
Create a Daily Routine with Normal Hours
Developing a schedule that you repeat each day can have a positive impact on your personal and professional life. Many successful people attribute their success to a morning of strict habits. Our users suggested an early stretch, walk, or other workout, and a healthy breakfast, as great ways to warm up for the day.
How you dress can also help you focus and mentally prepare for a full "workday" even if you will be on your couch for some of it. We recommend not working from you pajamas exclusively. It's important to be comfortable but taking it too far can negatively impact the quality and consistency of your work.
It can be difficult to maintain normal hours from home, especially with family and other obligations around literally every corner, but it is important to try to keep a consistent, realistic routine. Do you want to get up and exercise before work? Do you have a set time for lunch? Try to maintain these activities, because the more familiar and consistent your work schedule, the better. Of course, you can be flexible with your routine when necessary, especially as you juggle other important obligations, but it is crucial to find a routine that works for you and keeps you focused.
Designate a Workspace
Studies show that having a specific workspace is important to help you focus, and a designated spot to work can result in less interruptions and more efficiency. If you have an actual office in your home, that's great, but those who don't will have to make the best use of their available space. A few good options are a kitchen counter, the dining room table, or a hallway desk.
Take Breaks and Get Outside
Take short breaks throughout the day to help increase your focus and productivity. Plan a quick walk or just a few minutes of sun a few times a day to help relax and recharge.
Stay in Touch
Socializing may be even more important when working remotely than it is in the traditional workplace. Make the effort to stay connected to co-workers, family, and friends. If you're not comfortable meeting in person yet, video calls can help stay in touch and provide some extra motivation to get out of your pajamas.
